Hewett and Kay Arrive in Melbourne. LONG DELAY AT CLONCURRY-.
United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 4. The second New Zealand crew to complete the Mac Robertson air race, J. D. Ilewett. C. E. Kay and F. H. Stewart (de ITavilland Dragon) arrived here on Saturday. Despite his long delay at Cloncurry, Hewett claims that he has a good chance in the handicap event. He intends to return to Sydney shortly preparatory to flying the Tasman. Cries of “Tenakoe” and “Kia Ora” greeted the flyers as they descended at Laverton Aerodrome. They were welcomed by Messrs Firth, Walker, Melrose, Turner and Pangborn and several New Zealanders besides. Hewett and Kay are both well. They .say that the section over Australia was the worst part of the flight.
ANOTHER RECORD
Waller and Jones Plan New Journey. LONDON, November 2. “Daily Express” understands that Cathcart Jones and Ken Waller j intend to attack the record to the Cape 1 of Good Hope with the same Comet, ' hoping to make the return trip in a | little over three days. The non-stop record in the direction | of the Cape is held by Squadron-Leader ; Gayford and Flight-Lieutentant Nicholetts (Fairey Napier), who flew the 5309 miles to Walvis Bay (780 miles short of Cape Town), in February, 1933, in 2 days 9 hours 25 minutes. Miss Amy Johnson (Mrs Mollison) (Puss Moth) flew to the Cape in stages totalling 6220 miles in 4 days 6 hours 54 minutes in November, 1932. FAMOUS PLANE BURNED. SYDNEY, November 4. A message from Rabaul, New Britain. the .seat of government of New Guinea, states that the historic aeroplane Canberra, which discovered Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, Mr C. T. P. Ulm and the Southern Cross when they were lost a few years ago, has been destroyed by fire in the Morobe District owing to a collision on a Lutheran Mission aerodrome. The pilot and mechanic escaped unhurt, but a native was burned to death. The late Captain Holden was the original owner of the Canberra.
