VICEREGAL. The Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) and Lady' Bledisloe this morning visited Messrs Duckworth, Turner and Company, Ltd.’s, shoe factory; and later presented Nurse Maude with the insignia of the Order of the British Empire. This afternoon they' visited the School for the Deaf, Sumner. The Hon G. J. Smith, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington this morning. Mr A. R. Brett returned to Auckland by the Monterey on Friday, after a trip to the United States. Mr F. Moodie (Napier) is a guest a'-, the United Service Hotel. Mr 11. Murphy (Wellington) arrived from the north this morning and is slaying at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs IT. T. Tozer (Canada), A. Martin (Wellington), W. D. Orbell (Fairlie) and H. Wallace (Dunedin) are guests at tlie New City Hotel. Sir Hubert Wilkins, who has been on a brief visit to Christchurch, was a passenger for Wellington by the interisland steamer last evening. A Press Association message states that Brigadier-General A. F. Heme arrived by the Akaroa from England today, en route to Melbourne, where he will attend the British Empire Service League Conference. The Rev Brother Benignus, Provincial of the Marist Brothers in New Zealand, returned to Auckland by the Monterey' on Friday, after inspecting the work of the Order in the Islands.
Mr J. F. Quinn, who has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands in Christchurch, to replace Mr W. Stewart, the Valuer-General, will arrive from Napier on Saturday morning to take up his duties here. Mr T. Murray, for thirty-six years secretary of the Trafalgar and Ohoka Lodges, U.A.0.D., at Kaiapoi, was honoured last evening by members of the Druids’ Order, on the occasion of his retirement from office. Mr Murray' was presented with a leather suit-case, and Mrs Murray with a crystal set. It was stated that when Mr Murray took over the seci etaryship. the Trafalgar Lodge had a deficit of 13s Gd, and in 1933 it had a surplus of £3200. A well-known medical practitioner of Hawke’s Bay, Dr John Cecil Tosswill. died last week at his home at Hastings. He was born in 1567 at Prebbleton, Canterbury, where his father was a well-known early' settler. Educated at Christ’s College, he later went to Edinburgh University, where he obtained his degree in medicine. Di Toss will is survived bv his widow and two sons, Mrs John ierence Tosswill, who is practising as a solicitor in Kuala Lumpur, Federated Malay> States, and Mr Rowland Cecil Tosswill, engineer, of Toronto, Canada.
