A severe thunderstorm accompanied by torrential rain occurred in South London and the adjoining counties last night, causing extensive flooding. Water invaded the basement of thousands of houses. An embankment collapsed on the railway near West Wickham. the driver of a passenger train pulling up within inches of derailment. One man was killed by lightning.
