COURT CLEARED.
Direction Given by Chief Justice. “BETTER GO VOLUNTARILY.” (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, July 24. “ I see all the men have retired. I think it would be advisable for the ladies to retire also,” said the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) in the Supreme Court, before a start was made with the hearing of evidence in a case in which a young man was charged with a sexual offence. There were a number of women m the gallery in the portion of the courtroom reserved for them. They perhaps did not hear his Honor’s advice, for they gave no indication of moving out in a body (says the “Post”). ** “If they don’t retire, I shall order them to go, so they had better go voluntarily,” said his Honor, speaking more loudly. One or two rose to go, others hesitated undecided, and there were others who made no move at all. His Honor, without further ado, made an order clearing the court, and the ladies in the gallery upstairs had to leave.
