Request for Removal of Duty on Oak. (“Star ” Parliamentarv Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 23. A request that the duty on oak should be abolished was made to the Minister of Customs Hhe Rt Hon J. G. Coates) to-day by a deputation representing the manufacturers of furniture. The abolition of the duty, it was claimed, would enable manufacturers to meet the lowered duty on the finished article and supply to the public goods at lower prices. The deputation also asked that the duty on moquettes and tapestries for furniture coverings should be reduced by 10 per cent. Mr Coates suggested that the furniture manufacturers should confer with the Sawmillers’ Federation with a view to reaching an agreement. He would be pleased to consider the re-J quests made by the deputation. J
