Shield Suggestions.
Dear Sir, —Now that the Ranfurly Shield has left Christchurch, will you kindly allow me to offer a few suggestions to the Canterbury Rugby Union before they again challenge for the Shield:— (1) Will the union now reconsider the broadcasting question with both eyes open ? (2) Will the union consider giving a little more attention to the junior grades? During the whole of this season all the members of the executive have been at Lancaster Park every Saturday afternoon instead of giving a little encouragement to these grades—the future All Blacks. (3) That the Rugby game be played for the game’s sake and not. as the present executive is doing, playing the game to see how much profit can be made out of each match. (4) Is the union in favour of the present system of playing for the Shield? I suggest that they should endeavour to have the rules amended to ensure that the Shield is held by the champion province. As a past delegate to the union, I regret having to write to you in this manner, but as an amateur sportsman I have been disgusted with the action of the present executive since the province has held the Ranfurly Shield. —I am. etc., AMATEUR SPORTSMAN.
