lnangahua Defeat Coast in Third Match.

(Special to the " Star.*’) GREYMOUTH, July 21. Both teams having had one success keen interest was taken in the third meeting of West Coast and lnangahua, at Victoria Park, Greymoutli, on Saturday. Unfortunately the weather conditions were most unfavourable, the ball being heavy and greasy, making sure handling exceedingly difficult. There was a fair attendance of the public. The lnangahua team was at full strength, and had no trouble in b.eating Coast, - who w eta without the services of T. O’Connor, G. N'awton, J. Kennedy and several of their other first ranking players, by 2S points to IS. Considering the conditions, the handling of Inaiigahua was good, and they were superior to Coast in all departments. The Coast forwards endeavoured to keep play tight, but lnangahua played ■an open game, or as open a§ the wet ground and ball would allow them.

P. Scott, lnangahua second five-eighth, was the best back on the ground, ai d was ably supported by M. Morris and T. M’Kenzie. K. Kerridge. G. August and H. Bailey were the pick of the Iruangaliua forwards.

The West Coast backs were somewhat at sea, J. Dodds, E. O’Brien and L. Martyn being the most impressive. Jim Tallentyre secured a large proportion Of the ball from the set scrums, aim the best loose forwards were W. Glynn and J. Calder. A feature of the game was the goal-kicking of Speakman (Cogst) and Scott (lnangahua). Winning the toss, Coast secured the advantage of a strong wind for the first spell, but lnangahua drew first blood, Stott being successful with a penalty kick. Shortly after lnangahua increased their lead to four, also with a penalty. Coast’s first points were gained as the result of a good solo effort by Preston, who sold the dummy and ran in and scored. Speakman was successful with the kick. E. O’Brieti was the next to score for Coast, In a similar manner, Speakman again adding th'd extra points. Territorially, the game was fairly even, but Coast soon increased their lead, Roberts sending Devonport away for a thirty-yard run, which he capped with a try. Speakman converted. A few minutes before halftirne four of the lnangahua backs combined in a pretty passing movement, for the half-back, Willman, to score near the posts, Scott adding the extras, and leaving the half-time score: West Coast 15, lnangahua 9.

lnangahua dr*Bw first blood in the second spell, after a prolonged attack, the centre, Morris, diving over for a good try, which Scott converted. With only one point separating the teams the play was keen at this stage, and Loth full-backs, J. Dodds and T. M’Kenzie. did good work. Eventually lnangahua took the lead, when Anderson, on the wing, dribbled over for an easy try Scott failed with the kick. The next try also went to Anderson. It also was unconverted. ' Coast made brief rallies, but the lnangahua defence was solid and. gave no chances awav. The other lnangahua winger, * Ritchie, secured the next try, picking Tip from a melee in the corner. Scott was again unsuccessful with the kick, tne ball having become very heavy by this time. Inangahua’s final try of the game was rather a lucky one. An lnangahua forward kicked through, along the ground. Martyn, who had gone back to full-back, fail'ed to stop it. and in a race to the line three Inangahua fob-wards were too much for Medlin (Coast) and Bailey was the first to fall on it. under the posts. Scott converted. Coast rallied in the closing stages, but were unable to Add to their tally, and the game ended: Inargahua 28, AVest Coast 18. .Mr J. O’Neill was referee.
