RELIEF OF DISTRESS.
Timaru Society Meets. (Special to the " Star.”) TIMARU, July 22. At the monthly meeting of the Timaru Central Relief Society, the financial position was discussed fully and it was estimated that there would be enough revenue from various sources to maintain the society's relief policy for about eight months. The Yen Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan presided. After discussion it was agreed that it would be impracticable to effect any change of policy. The secretary reported that the number of families operating in June was 609. as against 543 in May. The retail value of services rendered was £1447 Is Od, being the highest to date, and the amount contributed by the applicants was £720 19s 6d. The secretary reported on the fire of July 14. The damage was confined to easily replaceable goods and the insurance company had already met the claim of £75 7s 7d made by the society, and the policy had been reinstated. The report was adopted.
The question of the special canvas was discussed, and in view of the difficulties, it was agreed to complete the work by circular, a committee consisting of Messrs Goodman, Virtue and Steven being appointed to co-operate with the secretary in this regard. J
