THEY WANT LARWOOD.
Newspaper Campaign for Test Team. (Received July 23, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 22. The newspapers are already launching a campaign for the inclusion of Larwpod in the team for the final Test match, which begins on August 18. Cecil Parkin in the “Empire News” says: “ The question is not how to get the Australians out, but how to get Larwood in. I know he will play in the fifth Test if he apologises to Marylebone, which will be delighted to forgive and forget.” According to the “Sketch” unofficial approaches have been made to Larwood regarding playing in the test, but the paper emphasises the point that the opposition against Larwood’s reinstatement is so strong that it is not likely that he will play in any more test cricket.
The “Sunday Dispatch” states that the informal talks that have occurred included Larwood meeting the Nottinghamshire committee and Nottinghamshire officials conferring with the M.C.Q. There have also been conversations between Lancashire and Nottinghamshire which may result in legtheory being finally buried. In addition, it is pointed out, Larwood’s articles have cleared the air and it should now be possible lor him to take his rightful place as England’s first bowler. Larwood, when playing against Lancashire, used an orthodox field, but Voce deliberately set a legfield and bumped his deliveries three times, one of which struck Iddon on the chest, when the batsman fell writhing, rousing the anger of the Lancashire crowd. A report is current in Manchester to the effect that Larwood has written to the test selectors withdrawing his objection to playing against the Australians. Larwood, when questioned by the “Sunday Times,” said: “I am not saj’ing anything about anything.”
