PERSONAL.

Mr C. W. Smith (Wellington) is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr J. W. Hannan, of Greymouth, is a guest at the United Service Hotel.

Mr A. O. Heanv, secretary to the Associated Chambers of Commerce, returned north last evening. Mr D. Jones, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, has returned to Christchurch from Wellington.

Mr Justice Johnston will leave Christchurch for Timaru on Monday. He expects to return on the following Monday.

The death occurred to-day in Wellington of Mr Charles Hugh Beggs, 39 years of age, inspecting accountant of the Health Department.

Mr T. W. Dobbie, chairman of directors of the Bendigo Rise and Shine Goldmining Co., Ltd., who is at present in Christchurch, will leave for Wellington this evening. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs W. Littlewood (Auckland), H. A. Hutton (Palmerston North), J. B. Reid (Wellington), F. Jackson (Nelson) and P. Crawford (Timaru). The following members of Parliament arrived from the north this morning: Messrs R. W. Hawke, J. A. Macpherson, IT. S. S. Kyle, P. A. de la Perrelle, J. Connolly and E. J. Howard.

Lieutenant IT. E. Erridge, Ordnance Officer of the Southern Command of the New Zealand Military Force, has been appointed Ordnance Officer (provisional) at the main ordnance depot, Trentham. Lieutenant D. Nicol has been appointed to fill the position to be vacated by. lieutenant Erridge at Burnham.

Mr W. Stewart, Commissioner of Crown Lands, who has been promoted to the position of Valuer-General, Weilington, was yesterday farewelled at luncheon by members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Civil Service Institute. Dr T. Fletcher Telford, local chairman, in presenting Mr Stewart with a suitably inscribed fountain pen, congratulated him on his well-earned promotion and wished him success and prosperity in his future career.
