Germans With Jewish Patronymics. BERLIN, July 12. German Aryans bearing Jewish names are empowered to change them by a decree issued recently. The first category of names which Aryans will be allowed to renounce embraces those of genuine German origin which, however, are popularly regarded as Jewish, such as Ilirsch and Goldschmidt. The second group includes purely Biblical patronymics which, through the centuries, have become known as predominantly Jewish, such as Solomon, Israel and Moses.

The last type includes surnames formed simply from city names, which were assumed by many non-Aryans at icar ** me " emant -’ipation of 1806, ’ when German Jews were first allowed to take proper names—such as Hamburger, Darmstaedter. Names which are borne equally often by gentiles and Jews—Meyer 'for in-stance-will not be affected by the decree.
