AUSTRALIAN RACING. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, July 19. The Clarence River Jockey Club races were held to-day. The Grafton Cup, of one mile and a quarter and 100 yards, resulted:— , Mr Kerry, 9.11 (Pratt) 1 Confab, 7.10 (Weiss) 2 Regal Star, 8.3 (Knox) 3 Fourteen horses started. Won by a neck, with a length between second and third. Time—2min 11 3-ssec. NOT SO GOOD AS EXPECTED. The Great Northern stars shone very dimly at the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting, says “ The Watcher.” Auckland had the largest representation for many years, but the form of these horses, on the whole, was very disappointing. Billy Boy and Prince Val retrieved the position somewhat with wins in the Wellington Steeplechase and Winter Oats respectively, but had anyone conjectured prior to the races that the northern province would fare so poorly, he would have been derided. The hurdlers in particular, suffered complete eclipse. It would seem that the Great Northern meeting is too severe a test for the majority to recover within the month.
