AT HASTINGS.

Grand National Candidates Engaged. LUNA LUX TO RUN. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, July 20. Fields of even quality- and improved average size have accepted for the Hawke s Bay r Hunt Club’s annual meeting at Hastings to-morrow, and the racing promises to be keenly contested in all events. The weather lately has been unsettled, but prospects are for an improvement. Unless the weather is very bad, the Hastings course can be relied on to provide the best possible conditions for racing. A number of the horses engaged to-morrow are likely to make the trip south to Riccarton next month, and their running should be worth notice.

The event of principal importance is the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Cup Steeplechase, for which nine have accepted. The form of the majority is obvious from the fact that only three of the field have been weighted above the minimum.

Cotsfield’s Napier Park efforts will probably send him out favourite, but the Hunt master's (Mr G. D. Beatson) candidate Coonoor, the winner last August, and likely to have benefited with his recent race in the Dannevirke Hunt Cup, will also not lack support. Consent made a promising debut at Dannevirke, but is never a reliable proposition nowadays.’ Hinatore also ran a fair race at Dannevirke for fourth, and Banjuke, resurrected after four years, was a useful horse in this type of race several y r ears ago, being a Hawke’s Bay Hunt Cup winner in 1927. The Hurdleracers. The hurdleracers will have their opportunity in the Otane Hack and Hunters’ Hurdle, with which the programme opens. The field is better class than its conditions might indicate, with two Grand National candidates in Luna Lux and Royal Lineage engaged. Royal Lineage carried list 81b into places on two days at Trentham, after having won on the first under lOst 101 b, so he must be nearly favourite here with list 91b. Luna Lux was going well when he fell at Dannevirke, and as he suffered no ill-effects he also will have confident following, especially •as on his effort to-morow depends whether or not he shall go down to Riccarton. Kimbo, the winner last August, is well placed in the handicap, but his recent form has not been too good, and likelier prospects are Heliotype, Anemometer, and Goshawk, all of whom have performed conspicuously in their latest races. If Heliotype proves as good over the small jumps as she was over the country at Hastings last month she might fully extend the top pair. Trentham The Guide. The open event on the flat is the Tikokino Handicap, a six and a half furlongs sprint, and in this Trentham form offers a handy- line, for all except two of the bottom-weights were racing last week. Slippery heads the list with 9st 131 b, and on his day he might not be stopped by the impost, for, although he is not big, he is strongly put together. Gainsfid is always a possibility-, but one who may be preferred at the distance is Cawbeen, a model of consistent running and deserving of better than minor places at Trentham. Sunny Sky and Royal Bengal will require to improve on last week’s showing, though the latter did not go bad races. Emotion’s recent hurdling may not have helped him for open sprinting, and Tres Sec was disappointing at Trentham Mahora is one of the fresh pair with a chance, as he will be improving with his racing, and is good class at his best. Hack Company. The two hack items, the Riverslea Handicap and the Waitanei Handicap, are run over one mile and six furlongs respectively-. In the Riverslea form points to Poniard, Ilest and M’Heath. but Passion Fruit, with his recent racing, may also run out the mile well, as he showed a liking for the distance in the Trentham Stakes last October when finishing only- heads from Southdown and Red Manfred. In the Waitangi Cawbeen and Ilest are also engaged, and both would be among the elect if produced. In their absence likely- ones are Suny Bachelor, Hybiscus, Flamingo, Royal Feast and Pukehou. Sabatini, in both hack events, is one always capable of upsetting calculations.

The Okawa Maiden has drawn a big field of eighteen. Maine is likely to be in confident demand after her second to Square Acre at Trentham last Saturday, and among others who will claim attention are Kentucky Song, Darecourt, Collodion and Father’s; Choice. In the Soutra Hunters’ Handicap, with gentlemen riders aboard, Anemometer may be favourite over Goshawk and Autumn Sun, but Luna Lux, Fitzquex and Rory- Mor are all possibles. The totalisator will be operated under the single pool system, with two dividends on the old 75-25 per cent basis. The following horses are likely to be well backed in their engagements: Otane Hurdles—Royal Lineage, Luna Lux and Heliotype. Okawa Maiden—Maine-The Khedive bracket, Kentucky Song and Darecourt. Hawke’s Bay Hunt Cup—Cotsfield, Coonoor and Hinatore. Riverslea Hack Handicap—Poniard. Passion Fruit and MTleath. Soutra Hunters’ Handicap—Anemorr -ter, Goshawk-Fitzquex bracket and Autumn Sun. Waitangi Hack Handicap—Cayybeen and Ilest, or Sunny Bachelor, Royal Feast and Ilybiscus. Tikokino Handicap—Slippery-, Cawbeen and Royal Bengal. The programme is—--12.15 p.m.
