Relief Works Depot Blown to Pieces. SYDNEY EXPLOSION. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 20, 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 20. A terrific explosion, which the police believe to have been deliberately set off, occurred early this morning,'when a large quantity of gelignite and detonators exploded in an unemployed relief works depet in the suburb of Bexley. The depot was blown to pieces and sheets of iron and tools were hurled hundreds of yards. The windows in the neighbouring houses were shattered. ceilings fell in and shop windows collapsed.
Residents of the locality were terrified. Some people sleeping in their beds were shaken violently as if by an earthquake. The electric light wires were severed by the flying iron, plunging the district into darkness.
The effect of the explosion was felt 14 miles away.
