Mr \V. Stewart, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and Chief Surveyor at Christchurch, has been appointed Valuer-General in succession to Mr T. Brook, who retired recently on superannuation. Mr Stewart, who was born in 1881, commenced work in the public service in the Wellington district as draughts-

man and survey cadet in 1899. He subsequently qualified as a surveyor. He was one of the most prominent officers of the Lands Department concerned in the administration and help to Raetihi settlers who suffered so severely in the extensive bush fires which swept the centre of the

North Island in 1018. Special loans were granted and other assistance was rendered to enable the settlers to restore their pastures and resume farming operations. In 1923, Mr Stewart was appointed chief draughtsman in the Christchurch Lands Office. He was promoted to the position of Commissioner and Chief Surveyor of Crown Lands at Christchurch in January, 1926.
