REMOVAL OF DUNNAGE.
Privilege to Watersiders Withdrawn. Notices were fixed at the head of, the gangway of ships in port at Lyttelton yesterday prohibiting watersiders from taking dunnage out of ships’ holds. The notices were issued by the employers after a watersider had taken ' some dunnage used for stowing casks of tallow on the Oran. It was contended that, by the removal of the battens, the lives of other watersiders had been endangered and that the practice of taking timber ashore must be prohibited. In the past, while permission has not been granted to the •watersiders to take dunnage ashore, the men have been in the habit of taking small pieces of wood home for firing and the privilege was much ap- . predated.
