CHESS CHAMPION.
Dr Alechine May Visit New Zealand. Dr A. A. Alechine. who has been the world’s chess champion ever since he convincingly defeated J. R. Capablanca in 1927, has definitely decided to compete at the Centenary Chess Congress, to be held in Melbourne at the end of the year. According to a cablegram received by Mr W. Toomath, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Chess Association, from Mr Dali, the Australian executive officer, the champion of the world could afterwards spend a month in New Zealand if terms can be arranged. The terms would include the living and travelling expenses of the champion and his wife. Mr Toomath immediately got in touch with the Auckland. Canterbury and Otago honorary secretaries with a view to reaching a definite decision at Wednesday’s annual meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association. The prospects of securing a visit from the world’s leading player are not bright unless substantial donations are received from unexpected quarters.
