OVERNIGHT ITEMS.

The question of restoration of a portion of the cuts in salaries and wages of the Riccarton Borough Council employees was briefly discussed at the council meeting last night, on the motion of Councillor S. B. Kershaw. The Mayor (Mr 11. S. S. Kyle. M.P.) stated that probably it would not have been possible to reduce the rates if the wage cuts had been restored. On the motion of Councillor 11. W. Wise, the Town Clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) was asked to prepare a report as to the cost of restoring 5 per cent of the cut. The report will be considered at the next council meeting. An illustrated lecture on “ Oxford and its Colleges ” was delivered by Dr A. L. Ilaslam to a fair gathering at the Christchurch Public Library last night, the address being the second of a series in aid of the children’s library. The tutorial system, considered Dr Haslam, was superior in the long run to the compulsory-lecture system in use in New Zealand. Lectures at Oxford were not compulsorv, but it was compulsory for undergraduates to wait upon the “ dons ” at least one hour in every v*eek with an essay bearing upon their research. Most of the tutorial work was done bv the “ dons,” who were awarded livings at the’ colleges for exceptional scholarship. Dr G. M. Lester, the chairman, moved a vote of thanks to the speaker and it was carried. The High Schools and Hostels Committee reported to the Canterburv College Council yesterday that it had received a letter from the president of the Christchurch High School Old Boys’ Association referring to the urgent need for an assembly hall at the High School, and stating that the Old Boys’ Association proposed to hold a fete in the school grounds on February 7, 8 and 9 to raise the nucleus of a fund for the erection of a brick gymnasium and concert hall to serve temporarilv as a place of assembly. The committee had replied congratulating the association on its enterprise and interest in the school, and wishing it every success.
