ABUSE OF PRIVILEGE.
Relief Workers and Cheap Tram Fares. The statement that certain relief workers were taking advantage of the privileges extended to them by the Tramway Board and. in a spirit of defiance, were using the trams without paying anything at all, was made at the ifleeting of the Tramway Board today by the chairman (the Rev J. K. Archer). Mr Archer advocated drastic measures so that a few individuals might not prejudice the privileges extended to the bulk of relief workers. Mr Archer said that the conditions of -the issue of the special cheap tickets were being honourably observed by the bulk of the relief workers, but a few set the board at defiance and used the trams without any payment whatever. Those men were all on one job, a job which gave them the maximum benefit from the cheap fares. Not only was the position regarded with the greatest disfavour by the board, but also by the relief workers’ own organisation. The board should sav definitely that it was not going to allow a few men to spoil the whole thing. The course indicated was to exclude them altogether or to prosecute for non-pay-ment.
