DIED IN POVERTY.
Mr Claude Meynell Eked Out Precarious Existence. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, (Received June 25, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 24. Mr Claude Meynell. the theatrical manager, died in poverty. He eked out a precarious existence as locum tenens for two years, using the family jiame of Dr Van Straubenzee. He occupied a single room in a London boardinghouse. Mr Meynell was a s©n of Colonel F. Van Straubenzee. He was educated at Sherbourne and Edinburgh University but he was on the stage at the age of eighteen (in 18851 and did not leave the stage till 1889. when he qualified &s a doctor at Edinburgh and practised as a physician and surgeon. He rejoined the theatrical profession in 1895, managing a tour in the English provinces. His first appearance overseas was in 1902, when he was appointed general manager and stage director for the company which Sir Herbert Tree sent to Australia under the management of J. C. Williamson.
