Sneaking Round the Scrum
Dear Sir,—As an old play’er. I support the “ Star's ” contention that senior Rugbv matches at Lancaster Park are not worth looking at. If the game is to recover lest ground, certain radical changes must be made fairly qukikly, and referees must exercise stricter control. And yet. why’ should referees have to be continually • n the watch for rule-breakers? Surely’ if a player is guilty of sneaking round the scrum in order to avoid detection while getting offside, his own captain should have the sportsmanship to step in. We saw instances of this creeping round the scrum on the Oval last Saturday, and saw the referee bobbing up like a Jack-in-the-bex on the other side to stop it. What kind of mentality leads to cheating of this type in an amateur geme? The offender is simply cheating himself and his team of the good opinion of others. The players ought to clean their own ranks and give us fair, open, honest Rugby’, win, lose or tie.—l am, etc. J.L.X.^
