DEMAND FOR CLOTHES
“ We can’t go on giving cut clothes as we have done this month.” said Mrs Herbert Smith, reporting this morning to the Women’s Executive of the Red Tross Society on the work at the depot. “ Yesterday, by half-past eleven, there was a queue cf applicants right down the stairs and out into the street.” From May 2 to May 24, 236 families with 630 children and 212 men received gaimerits. The financial position of the society was causing the committee great concern. Lady Wigram, who presided over the meeting, postponed any further discussion as to ways and means until after the meeting of the finance committee next month. A motion r.f sympathy with Dr and Mrs D. F. Hansen in the loss of their h °Sister Christian, IC 'uJdy S Wigranf’ reported, would take up an appointment in a Wellington hospital after July 16. Mrs H. S. Lawrence reported that £3O had been cleared as a result of the dance in the Merivale Schoolroom. Special thanks, she said, were due to Mesclames J. CJ. L. Vernon and Oakleigh Greenwood. Disastrous Street Appeal. Wyatt’s comment on the combined street appeal held in conjunction with ihe surfing soc ieties and the British Sailors’ Society. The Red Cross Society would benefit bv roughlv £llO. Votes of thanks were accorded to Mrs Wyatt, Heath and Co., the Mayoress (Mrs D. G. Sullivan) and her helpers, and the Town Clerk, Mr .T. s.
