“HIDDEN CHILDREN.”
Clandestine Polygamy in Turkey. CONSTANTINOPLE. May 13. Although polygamy has been forbidden by law in Turkey since 1926, numerous polygamous unions have taken place since then, and it is believed that there are about 4,000.000 “ hidden children ”as the result. Parents of the unregistered offspring of these illegal unions are nt. w being asked to declare their “ hidden children ” so that they may be made citizens of the Republic. Tens of thousands of these “ illegitimate ” children are being registered, the parents having been granted pardons under the amnesty law of last year. It must be observed that only the children, and not the illegal unions, are being recognised. The polygamous marriages contracted since 1926 are still invalid. T kev’s population is expected to rise from 14.000.000 to 18.000.000 when the hidden children and other unregistered persons are added.
