TROTTING NOTES.

XTOMINATIONS for two trotting events at the Ashburton meeting will close at eight o’clock to-night. Nominations are due to-morrow night for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on May 19. Acceptances for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday will close to-morrow night. Acceptances for the first day of the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting, which opens on Saturday, will close to-morrow night. After the Forbury Park meeting, Harold Logan will go straight to Oamaru to fulfil engagements there on Saturday. * * * * Morello has trained on exceptionally well since he chased War Buoy home at Ashburton recently, and he will race prominently at Dunedin to-morrow. * * * * Young Travis is as fit as a fiddle and all eyes will be on him when he steps out at Forbury to-morrow. 5jC * * * Walter Wrack only has to be favoured with a dry track to go particularly well at Forbury to-morrow. ANOTHER FOR DONALD. The Dunedin sportsman, Mr W. W. M’Lachlan, has purchased the five-year-old pacing gelding Mocast and has placed him in C. S. Donald’s stable. Mocast is a promising half-brother to Downcast and has won several races in Southland, where a high opinion is held of him. Mocast did all his early racing under E. Todd, of Wyndham. The price is stated to be £SOO, that is, £250 in cash and certain contingencies. MAY PREFER DIRT TRACKS. Queen Author shapes as if she will go on to win races in good company. She may prefer dirt tracks, and she has a lot of speed, and, judged by her good effort at Forbury on Thursday, a two-mile journey should not trouble her. She may win again at Dunedin to-morrow. HE IS GOOD. The five-year-old pacer Nelson Pointer is a strikingly good horse, and his recent successes in Southland make it plain that he is capable of further improvement. He is engaged at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow, and will receive solid support from his home town. Nelson Pointer is by Nelson Bingen from Merce Pointer, who is a descendant of the Thelma family, which includes Wildwood Junior, Adonis, Cameos, Author Dillon, Onyx, etc. MUCH FANCIED. Peter Locanda is all the rage for the Farewell Handicap at Forbury tomorrow. Off the limit of a 2min 47sec class, one mile and a quarter, Peter Locanda reads well. * * * * Chenwood flattered his supporters for nearly a mile in the Flying Handicap on the first day at Forbury, and then made one of his bad breaks, and dropped back into the ruck. He figures on the limit of the Farewell Handicap at Dunedin to-morrow, and if the track is firm *he may hand out a beating to the more fancied candidates. PRAIRIE KING SOLD. Mr G. Aitcheson has purchased the pacing gelding Prairie King from the Southland sportsman, Mr J. Forde Prairie King has plenty of ability and may win races in Canterbury. The price paid is stated at £SOO. The gelding will go into F. Holmes’s stable. GOLD BELL MARES Gold Bell was never estimated at his proper worth in his young days at the stud, but he may live on successfully through his daughters, because his pedigree is one that should assert itself. Gold Bell was g(*t by Capitalist from Merry Bell, by Hatta—Silver Bell, by Blackwood—Fannie Bell, one of the imported gems in the Stud Book. Capitalist was got by Rothschild from Berlin Maid, by Berlin from Blue Grass Belle, one of the early importations from America. The two-year-old pacer Donalda, in B. Jarden’s stable, has been causing his trainer some anxiety recently. The New Zealand Sapling Stakes candidate has developed lameness, and Jarden is suspicious that a splint is manifesting itself. He hopes to be able to treat the 1 affected part and thus be able to keep this very promising young pacer going for his big engagement at Ashburton in June. * * * * The pacing gelding Marvin Bingen has benefited considerably from the holiday he was awarded after his West Coast activicies at Christmas and New Year time, and he is again in course of preparation for early new season's racing. He is trained at New Brighton by J. P. M’Neil. ENJOYING A REST. L. Davidson has decided to give Recess a rest, and this fine mare is enjoying every moment of her leisure hours. She has done remarkably well under Davidson, who should receive further substantial returns from her future efforts. J. Lorgelly is spending a good deal of time educating the five-year-old horse by Travis Axworthy from F. E Bells. This horse is a chestnut in colour and is a strongly-made individual. On looks and on breeding he should make good. COURAGE WAS REQUIRED. It requires courage as well as sound condition to win under conditions that were in evidence on the first day at Forbury Park. Action is a big contributing factor to success in deep going, but even so it must be supported by courage derived from breeding and racing condition imparted by the trainer, states “ Sentinel ” in the “ Otago Daily Times." Short-actioned horses always go better than longstriders in deep going. For that reason a long-strider that can go fast on firm ground may be lost in heavy going and be beaten by an inferior but shorterstriding horse. A really great horse must have a long stride, but cannot grip the ground unless it supplies a good foothold. That is why form becomes completely upset by a change from firm to soft going. 9

WON UNDER DIFFICULTIES. When a horse wins under difficulties comprised by bad luck in the running and also heavy going that accentuates , a task, it greatly enhances the merit of a win. Waress won the Flying Ilan- ■ dicap on the first day at Forbury under difficulties, and won really well at the finish. She is a four-year-old filly by Man o’ War from Ivy Mac, by General Mac from Manuka, a sister to the famous pacer and sire Ribbonwood. General Mac, the sire of Ivy Mac, was got by General Tracey from Cantaloupe, by Camel from a mare of unknown breeding. Camel was by Berlin from Duchess of York, by Traducer— Gentle Annie, by Sportsman. It will be seen that Waress inherits infusion of the thorough-bred through her dam, and in good time the fact should add to her prowess on the race track and enhance her value as a brood mare. OAMARU ENTRIES. In the nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting Moana Tama should have appeared in the Advance Handicap and not the Innovation, and Lady Sonoma in the Innovation Handicap and not in the Advance. Singularly enough the nominations of seven horses by the same sire, Nelson Bingen, in the Waikaura Handicap, of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting, were received in succession by the secretary (Mr Hugh Robertson). They were Gyrate, Kilbirnie Dan. Golden Bingen, Orphan Bingen, Triangle, Mahinerangi, and Bill}- Sundy. The last horse nominated in the race, Bon Haven, is also by the same sire, making a total of eight out of fifteen nominations. LILIAN BOND’S INJURY. It is a matter of great regret that such a promising filly as Lilian Bond suffered a serious injury when running in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap at Forbury on Thursday. The cut abcfve her offside front fetlock seemed to be too high up to come from an overreach, and probably occurred through a mishap or interference from another horse in the race. Lilian Bond was developing form that would have brought her into a high next season, and it is to be hoped that the mishap will not call a serious halt to her racing career. rt•*ot rt x a r-u xti~ nks .
