Championship Play at Highheld Links. (Special to the ** Star/') TIMA RU, May 6 The first round of the South Canterbury women’s golf championship and the Highfleld trophy competition were played on the Highfiold links on Saturday morning, In bleak weather. The course was very heavy, and bunkers were well filled with water as a result of the drenching rain throughout the day and night, and although the strong wind this morning had a drying effect, its influence was little felt before midday. The fairways and greens were completely saturated and were dead. Only three of the four championship matches were played, and the results provided no surprises. Miss Horwell accounted easily for Alias Cuthbertson, and Airs W. A. Scott and Miss Loughnan gained comfortable victories over Miss Tizard and Miss Pringle respectively. In the semi-finals to be played on Alonday, Aliss Horwell meets Mrs Hawkes, and Mrs Scott will oppose Miss Loughnan. Similarly. there were only three matches in the first round of the Highfield Trophy competition. Miss Hertsh-t and Mrs Stickings both winning their guinea by substantial margins. Mrs Al'Millan had a hard struggle with Mrs E. G. Kerr, and ultimately won, 3 up and 2. Results:— CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss J. Horwell beat Miss Cuthbertson, 5 and L Airs N. Hawkes beat Aliss K. Johnston by default. Airs W. A. Scott beat Miss W. Tizard, 4 and 3. Allsh H. Loughnan beat Miss F. Pringle, 4 and 3. HIGHFIELD TROPHY. Airs Al’Millan beut Mrs K. G. Kerr, 3 and 2. Aliss Hertslet beat Airs J. G. Johnston, 6 and 5. Aliss 1. M Kerchar beat Mrs Grant bv default. „ , ~ ‘Mrs Stickings beat Miss G. Campbell, 6 and 5. Timaru Club. The results of the Wright Cup mixed foursomes bogey, in which fifty-four competed on Saturday afternoon, are as fo Miss Waddell and E. A. Cockroft (20), 2 down. . , Miss James and Baxter (15), 3 down. Airs Kingston and Kingston (15), 3 Miss James and Baxter won the second prize on the count back. Avondale Club. The match scheduled for Saturday at Avondale will be played next .Saturday. \n amended draw will be published on Thursday. The first round of the Stringer Bowl foursome has been extended to May 13. Lyttelton Club. Medal matches were played at Charteris Bav yesterday. Miss Edna Ayers won in the senior division with a card of go-16— 74. and the junior competition went to Miss AT- Williams, 109 34—75.
