FATAL HEAD INJURIES.
Christchurch Man’s Death in Auckland. Per Press Association AUCKLAND, May 3. Fatal head injuries were received by Mr A. R. Ponder, a well-known commercial traveller, of Rugby Street Christchurch, this afternoon, when he was struck by a motor-truck near a safety zone at the corner of Queen Street and Victoria Street East. A vehicle owned by Turners and Growers, Ltd., was proceeding up Queen Street and Mr Ponder was knocked down, striking his head on tne kerb of the safety zone. The injured man, who was unconscious, was takin to hospital in an ambulance and died at 7 p.m. The late Mr Ponder was one of the most popular commercial men in the Dominion and he was well known in all parts of New Zealand. He had represented a Melbourne importing firm for many years. His son, Mr A. O Ponder, a graduate of Canterbury University College, served with the New Zealanders during the war and was subsequently elected a Rhodes Scholar. After leaving Oxford University he accepted an important executive post with a Canadian chemical firm and made his home in Canada. Mr Ponder leaves two daughters, one resident in England and the other, Miss Irene Ponder, is an employee of the Christ church Gas Company.
