DISMAL DORA LAW.
Foreign Visitors Left Thirsty. LONDON, April 26. I regret the decision, because the magistrates making the order know the district and what its residents and visitors want,” said Mr Justice Humphreys, concurring with the Chief Justice, Lord Hewart, and Mr Justice Avory that the Steyning (Sussex) magistrates’ order, extending the opening of hotels half an hour in summer time was illegal. The decision affects 120 holiday resorts, in the South of England, where the licensing justices have extended hotel hours since 1921. The London “ Daily Mail,” in a leader, regards the prohibition of sum-mer-time extension of drinking hours as unfortunate, “ as it will deter the visits of foreigners and send British abroad, as people hate being treated like silly children and deprived of the right of judgment. It is due to a Dismal Dora, imbecile, michievous law, the reform of which a handful of faddists has repeatedly prevented.”
