Meeting of School Sports Association. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, May 3. At a meeting of the Ashburton County Schools’ Sports Association this afternoon, the president, Mr J. T. Thomas, was in the chair. It was decided to hold house Rugby matches and to play friendly inter-school games later in the season. Messrs A. R. Gourlay and J. MacMillan were appointed selectors of the country representative team and Messrs D. M’Donald and E. S. Chambers were appointed selectors of the town senior team. It was re» ported that the association had a credit of £l9. Good wishes were extended to Mr G. E. M’Curdy, the secretary, who is leaving Allenton for Whakaki, Hawke’s Bay, during the term holidays. The president referred to the keen interest Mr M’Curdy had taken in school sports, and on behalf of members presented him with a casket of cigarettes. Mr C. D. Francis was appointed secretary. Improvement in Conditions. As an indication of an improvement in the conditions generally, the principal of the Ashburton Technical High School (Mr R. J. Thompson) intimated at this evening’s meeting of the board that an unusually large number of boys and girls had secured positions during the past month, no fewer than four leaving last week to take up employment. St Stephen’s Social Club. There was a good attendance at the opening meeting of St Stephen’s Literary and Social Club last evening. Impromptu debates were held, the speakers being Messrs C. Childs and .1. Hamilton and the Rev A. J. Petrie and Mr S. M. Cassidy. Methodist Church Anniversary. Arrangements were made for the Methodist Church anniversary to be held near the end of the month at a meeting of the trustees last evening. It was decided that the special services be held on Sunday, May 20, and that they be conducted by the president of the conference (the Rev Clarence Eaton, of Christchurch).
