ALL BLUNDERED.
Every Horse in ’Chase Makes a Mistake. United Press Assn:—By Electilc Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, May 3. The third day of the WarrnambooJ Racing Club’s meeting was concluded to-day, the following being the principal results:— THE WARRNAMBOOL CUP. of one mile and three furlongs. THREE PIPS. Mr L. O. Parkinson’s b g, by Thrice—Orange Pippin, 7.0 (Moran) 1 ISLE OF AST UR, Mr E. Teniby’s b g. by Isle of Arran—Poetical. 9.0 (A. Reed) 2 EASTERN CHIEF, Mr J. I'. Arthur’s b c, by Eastern Monarch— Eleanora, 8.10 (Beasley) - 3 GRAND ANNUAL STEEPLECHASE, about three miles. FLAVEDO, Mr H. Leek’s ch ,g. by All Black—Flavescent, 9.12 (Sweetham) 1 LANILDA. Mr FulJarton’s blk g. by Lanius —Gilda, 9.10 (Fullarton) 2 MERRY EVE, Mr V. R. Petrie’s gr g, by Eyeglass—Bundook, 9.10 (Carter) 3 Every horse in this event either stopped, baulked or fell. At one stage there was not a horse running. The winner stopped once and fell once, and eventually won easily. Merry Eve stopped twice and Lanilda Tell and was remeunied. The Warrnambool Racing Club’s Cup meeting is the most important country fixture of the year in Victoria. Warrnambool is 165 miles W.S.W. of Melbourne. It is held annually on the first Tuesday and Thursday in May. On the Wednesday the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club holds its meeting, and that really is an amateur day fer only horses nominated by members may race and only amateur jockeys may ride. The Warrnambool steeplechase course is probably the most difficult in Australia, and the Grand Annual Steeplechase is the longest race run in the Commonwealth. Its official distance of “ about three miles ” is deceptive, a survey having revealed that it is really over 3* miles. The 33 fences jumped during its course comprise a variety of obstacles, including a formidable stone wall. a There are also road doubles over which a hunter might be expected to be at home. While flat races at Warrnambocl are run the left-handed (Riccarton) way, steeplechases there are run right-hanj-ed. The ’chasers leave the course proper at the back to climb a hill. When they cross the top they encounter a tricky road-clouble. At the foot of the sharp descent of the hill is a jump. Landing over this, the horses have to turn at almost right angles, with another fence to be negotiated almost immediately.
