High-Priced Hyacinth.
A Garden Corner
'J'HE ROMAN HYACINTHS, Hyacinthus orientalis albulus, are always pure white and flower much earlier than other varieties. The Italian hyacinths, 11. romanus. somewhat resemble the Roman hyacinths, but do not flower so early. This variety covers the other colours. At one time, the double forms used to be very popular, but now they are being superseded by the singles, mainly on account of their increased size. It is interesting to note the prices of some of the more popular varieties at the end' of the eighteenth century. Mirabeau, a double blue, was priced at £3 15s; Imperatrice Romaine, a double white, was £4 15s; Compte de la Coste, a double red, was £l2 12s; Louis XVI., a double red, was £lO 10s. Collections of 100 varieties, all named, for £8 Bs, and the same collection, but not named, for £1 Is. In 1791, two beautiful varieties appeared, Trianon, a fine double blue, and the other, Flos. Sanguineus, a ruddy pink. Unlike that of some flowers, the later history of the hyacinth is devoid of anvthing sensational. T. D. LENNIE.
