“NO-STOCKING” HABIT.
Sculptor Deplores Modern Feminine Trend. LONDON, April 20 “ I deplore the tendency of feminine youth to discard stockings, not on Mother Grundy grounds, but because the fashion is inappropriate and ugly.” writes the well-known sculptor, Charles J agger. “ The beauty of a woman's calf and ankle,” he sa\ r s, “ lies in the shape and moulding, not the texture of the skin. Well-cut stockings improve the moulding by filling up the hollows and flatiening out excrescences. This is a help to beauty, especially that of the ankle and knee, where often there is a harsh outline owing to the tendons and bones being close to the skin. “ The stockingless practice forgoes these aids to beauty and reveals veins and mottlings and much more unsightliness. Moreover, it continued, it will make women's legs as hirsute as men's. Even the ballroom has been invaded by this inappropriate nudity. I am surprised at such shortsightedness.”
