PRICES DECLINE.

Drop of Twopence at Timaru Wool Sale. NUMEROUS PASSINGS. An all-round decline of from a penny to twopence on the values ruling at the Timaru wool sale of February 9 was the main feature of the third and final sale of the season held at Timaru yesterday. Prices were about on a par with those at recent North Island sales, with cross-breds a shade dearer than at Wellington last Monday. Bidding for the offering of 2119 lots was erratic and passings were frequent, although a big percentage of the passed wool was later disposed of privately at prices approaching growers’ reserves. France and Germany were the chief operators at the sale, Germany buying through brokers as well as her own buyers. France was in the market for choice fleece wool and pieces, and Bradford picked up a few lots suitable for top-making, becoming more active as the sale drew to a close. Some of the best lots went to Dominion mills, while local speculators sought a share of the cheaper lots. The offering was of a rather better quality than is usual for an end-of-season sale and the wool opened up in very fair condition. A large proportion of it was reclassed in the Timaru stores and it speaks well for the way this work is done that top price for the sale, was paid for four bales of half-bred from the bins. Passings, which comprised about 25 per cent of the offering, were mostly in the odd lots, as the fleece wool sold generally up to expectations, although sellers’ reserves were well above some buyers’ limits. The Best Prices. Merino fleece wool made to 181 d, compared with 203 d at the last Timaru sale: half-bred 20’d, compared with 24fd: three-quarter-bred, 143 d, compared with 19£d, and cross-bred 9d, compared with 163 d. Following are some of the best prices realised : Merino—Shelton Downs (Mr A. M’Kinnon, Lake Ohau), 8 bales, 183 d. Mount Top (Mr D. Stewart, Albury), 8 bales, 183 d. * Half-bred—Mount Top, 9 bales, 20d. Shelton Downs, 10 bales, 193 d; 5 bales, 193 d. PIT, 3 bales, 19d. Hazelburn, 4 bales, 19d. Bin lots brought 143 d for half-bred bellies and 163 d for half-bred necks. Order of Sale. The order of sale was as follows: Bales Dalgety and Co., Ltd 618 Loan and Merc. Agency Co., Ltd. 102 Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd 460 National Mortgage and Agency Co. 614 Canterbury Farmers’ Co-op. Assn., Ltd 325 Total 2119 There was only a small attendance of the public and many gaps were apparent in the buyers’ benches. It was a great contrast to the excitement of the February sale when buyers put up their bids enthusiastically, watched by a crowded hall. Range of Prices. Owing to the small offering at the sale, an approximate range of prices only can be made for comparative purposes. Following is the range with that of the previous sale on February 9 also given: Feb. 9 April 27 Merino— 1934 1934
