THE LEAGUE CODE.

Prospects Appear Bright for New Season. FASTER PLAY PLANNED. Faster and better League should be seen in Chrisehurch this season, and competition play under the Canterbury Rugby Football League will start tomorrow. The Referees’ Association, which has been augmented in numbers, has announced its intention of showing stricter attention to the rules, especially the rule governing playing the ball. This will mean that play will be speeded up. Forty-five teams have entered in the various grades, and of these six are in the senior group. The draw for Saturday is: Hornby v. Lin wood, Sydenham Park. Sydenham v. New Brighton, New Brighton Domain. Addington, a bye. Ilenere Walker, a solidly-built Maori forward, who last year played Rugby Union for Waimate, is a distinct acquisition to the Linwood senior pack. E Logie, formerly full-back for Pirates, has joined up. The rest of the team will be made up from the club ranks, with E. Dykes and IT. Gibson, second grade backs, F. Jackson, B. Ayres. C. Becks and C. Priest also for the backs, with A. Stewart and A. Downing again among the forwards. The side will lose d valuable man in R. A. Jorgensen, who cannot play through injury, and the good fiveeighth, L. Merson, has gone to the North Island. Noel Gillespie will not be playing for the first month or so of the competition. F. Butler, a forward, is another departure. There will be few changes in the Sydenham team, but two Pirates’men, L. Forbes, five-eighth, and T. Carey, a forward, have joined their ranks and will probably be given a place in the senior team. Two second grade players, R. Cockles and E. Grimes, both forwards, have been promoted, and T. Thin will be tried out as half-back. For Hornby, T. Wellsniore, W. Palamountain, M. Standeven. J. M'Carthv, J. Howison, W. Woodgate, S. Minards. YV. \ ivian, W. Dunn and C. Matson are available, and T. Baker, J. Airey and T. Poulson have been promoted. They should make a useful combination. New Brighton and Addington should have strong sides, with most of their players coming forward from last season. Jack Amos, the Addington forward, has gone to Dunedin, so he will not be available.
