PLANTATION WORK.
Board Members Inspect Properties. Members of the Selwyn Plantations Board returned to the city last evening, after concluding a two days’ inspection of the board’s properties, 15,000 acres in all, of timber lands between the' Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers. The party left Christchurch on Thursday morning, and during the day visited an area which ranged from Southbridge to Sheffield. An early start was made yesterday morning, the party first visiting Dorman’s Plantation at Springfield. Here they inspected an area of twenty-three acres which is being milled. Satisfaction was expressed with the work which is concerned mainly with species of the pine family. A few silve- birches in the plantation are being reserved for experimental purposes. After l unch at Hororata, several areas on Ardlui Road occupied the attention of the party. Keen appreciation was expressed at the wonderful success achieved in planting in the district during the past three years. An area two years ago that was cleared of gum and wattle, was planted the same season with pinus insignis. The trees have made wonderful growth and hardly a miss could be noticed in a 200acre block. The inspection was completed at 4 p.m. Before leaving the city Mr G. Hall (acting-chairman) and Mr W. P. Spencer, moved that the members’ appreciation be accorded to the Superintendent for his fine planting schemes during the past year. Congratulations were also extended to the secretary for the arrangements made and to Mr Clements who was in charge of the transport.
