Showman Conducted Game of Chance. CASE AT TEMUKA. (Special to the "Star.**) TEMUKA, April 13. In the Temuka Court this morning, before Messrs W. F. Evans and H. E. Gapper, Justices, George Garner and Leonard Stanley Dunford were charged with being rogues and vagabonds and playing a game of chance on the Winchester Show Ground, thereby committing a breach of the Gaming Act. Mr F. A. Joynt appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty. Sergeant Hill said that.both were showmen and the game appeared to the police to be one more of chance than of skill. The men had been convicted before of similar offences, but the present offence was not a grave one. Mr Joynt submitted that there was a doubt as to whether the game was one of chance or not. It had been played before under the supervision of the police. In answer to the Bench, the accused stated that tfi.ey were not members of the Showmen’s Association. It was non-existent now. In convicting and fining each accused £lO, without costs, the Bench said that a showground was the place where the farming community assembled. and everything should be fair and above board. Games must be conducted on honest lines.
