NEW STATION.
Work at Wellington Commenced. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. April 11. The first actual constructional work in connection with the new railway station has begun in the driving of nests of piles which will form the support for the building. More difficulty in getting the pile 9 down is being experienced than wag anticipated. They are entering a spongy blue “pug” which seems to give over a considerable area and then return practically to its original position: yet the point of the pile penetrates so little that a threeton hammer bounces off the pine “dolly” that is interposed above the top of the pile. As a result of operations to-dav and yesterday it has been realised that the driving of shorter piles will suffice to give the necessary foundation. Piles twentv feet long have so far been driven only about halfwav and. if the ground is of the same material all over, an average of 12ft piles may suffice.
