Saturday's beach race meeting was a surprise to a number of motor-cyclists, due to the fact that the Pioneer Club kept the date as private as possible in order to avoid a large crowd of spectators. The idea turned out to be excellent for, despite the fact that there was quite a large crowd, its size gave the officials no bother and the events went ahead without interruption. The meeting was notable for the very fine finish, tor a beach race, in the six miles race, which was decided over a half-mile course. Gear-changing was a feature of the event and this accounted, to some extent, for.the success of Evans. Times were good in all the events. Outstanding* Performances. The most outstanding performances were those of G. W. Hockley, L. E. Evans, L. Harrington and Alex Smith. Evans won the six miles race riding the diminutive O.K. Supreme camshaft, which fully Jived up to its reputation of being a fast model. He took it out again in the championship and annexed third place in good time. G. W. Hockley won the middle-weight title with comparative ease, but was gaining a big advantage over Smith at the corners, through the latter’s difficulty with his gear-change. L. Harrington put up fastest time of the day in the flying mile event, but failed to see out the six miles race. E. H. Buckley and V. Ettwell rode consistently and well. Buckley did not seem to be able to reproduce the speed he showed in the flying half-mile attempts in the championship. It looked as if the ever-green little Harley was a trifle off-colour. The irrepressible Joe Deyell, appearing, as seems to be usual, on a differest machine for each event, was out of the places. The following are the detailed speeds attained by the riders over the halfmile:— First Second Mean run. run. speed, m.p.h. m.p.h. m.p.h. 250 C.C. Class— L. E. Evans 72 76.3 74.15 W. As yet the venue for Sunday’s run has not been fixed, but a new destination Is being considered, and should prove very suitable fop the sports programme that the motor committee has arranged. The competitions for the Pirate Cup will commence with this meeting, and in addition the points for the Vimiera Cup will continue from the last Prebbletpn meeting. The club will leave the railway yard a£ as^usual. Northern Grass-track Notes. Vic Browne and C. Rhodes have returned from their visit to the North Island for the Gisborne and Napier grass-track meetings. Browne annexed a few minor placings, while Rhodes finished in only two races and won both. Browne states that his companion’s machine was flying when it did function and he easily stalled off a challenge by Harry Mangham, who is considered the last word in grass-track racing nowadays. Handicaps are rigid in the North Island and only short limits are allowed. This is a move that has been advocated locally and, with the influx of particularly fast machines. it seems as if the Pioneer Club will have to consider it in future. « « K Pioneer Club Sports Bay. The Pioneer Snorts Club will hold a sports day on April 22. Included in the programme will be a miniature T.T. over a new course which the club has located. Further details in connection with the programme will be contained in these notes next week. v Canterbury Club’s Trial. Final arrangements in connection with the Canterbury Club’s trial were made at a meeting of the committee last evening. It was decided to substitute a starting test and secret checks for the petrol consumption test. The Kittle River cheek will be situated at the foot of the climb to Hill Top. Entries close on Saturday next at noon. The arrangements for the dance have been completed and tickets are obtainable from Messrs F. Davis and A. J. Clements, Akaroa. Items will be given at the dance by 3YA artists. Tt has been decided to close the season, which ends on April 30, with a dance. A sub-committee has been apnointed and details in connection with it will he completed and an announcements made at the dance at Akaroa. V K *’* Social Bun. The Union Jack Club held a social run to Coe’s Ford last Sunday. The event was an outstanding success and thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
