Clowes . 6 down Alisses Al. Wilson and M. Peate 9 down Aliss W. Robertson won the putting competition. IN SOUND POSITION. Ashburton Hospital Board’s Finances. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, April 9. In a review of the activities of the Ashburton Hospital Board for the past twelve months the chairman (Mr W. G. Gallagher) at to-day’s annual meeting of the board said it was pleasing to record the improvement that had taken place during recent months. The board’s financial position was particularly sound and it was hoped to work on a slightly reduced levy during the coming year. Not only were the hospital rates the lowest in the South Island, but the cost per head of the population was considerably below the New Zealand average. The efficiency of the hospital had been maintained at its usual high standard. Dealing with the hospital statistics the chairman stated that 1040 patients were admitted to the institution during the year, compared with 1092 in 1932-33. The financial statement showed that the year commenced with a credit of £l6 7s 6d and closed with a credit of £936 0s 9d. The income for the year v*as £20,170 9s sd, the chief items being; Patients’ fees £5578 13s 9d, maintenance levies £7401 2s 4d and subsidies £5762 2s. The expenditure was £19,250 16s 2d, of which general maintenance accounted for £13,479 10s. The medical superintendent (Dr A. J. Mason) reported that 72 patients had been admitted during the month and 87 had been discharged. There were 60 patients in the institution at the end of the month. The matron reported that Nurses Mee, Sandrey and Field were absent on annual leave. The chairman of the hospital committee, Mr F. Frampton, reported that the tenders for food supplies had been accepted Fish, J. Turnbull; meat, T. P. Barber; bread, G. Jordan; groceries, Farmers’ Co-op., Ltd.
