BODY RECOVERED.
Birdling’s Flat Drowning Accident. The body of Mr J. H. R. Cole, who was drowned while fishing at Birdling's Flat on Mondav evening, was recovered yesterday. Cole, a single man, thirtyeight years of age, of 10, Clyde Street, was fishing from some rocks on the beach at five o’clock when the accident took place. The tide was high and heavy waves were beating against the rocks on which the two men stood. An extra heavy wave caught Cole and swept him off the rock. His companion threw him a line, but Cole was unable to grasp it and disappeared. Search parties had been looking fer the body since the time of the accident, and it was first sighted on Wednesday, but it could not be brought out until yesterday. Mr Robert Cole, a brother, and Messrs Hastings and O’Donnel went out yesterday to the cave where the body had been washed up. They took a lifebelt and-wire rope and hauled the body up the face of a cliff. Later it was taken down to the flat and brought to Christchurch. The late Mr Cole was a rifleman in the New Zealand Expeditionary F orces.
