SUPPLY OF MILK.

Proposal to Set Up Council Not Favoured. The proposal to set up in Christchurch a milk council, as in Auckland, to regulate competition and stop price wars, was discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night. No action was taken. The Christchurch Milk Marketing Association asked for the support of the Chamber in getting the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Bill brought before Parliament. A letter from the association said :—“ The business has got into a hopeless mess through a price-cutting war which has been in operation for some time. This association’s efforts so far have been unsuccessful, and it now feels that the only solution is to have a council appointed to control the supply. Legislation to that effect has been passed for Auckland, and a milk council has been appointed there.” “ I feel strongly on this matter,” said Mr John Mac Gibbon. ”1 have had experience of a corporation milk supply. I found that the milk in Wellington is pretty poor stuff, nothing like as good as that we get in Christchurch. I have known it to go sour in eight hours. It comes from all over Manawatu and Wairarapa. I do not think we should interfere in this matter.” Mr V. E. Hamilton said that there was some danger of the standard of the milk being jeopardised by a trade war. Mr Mac Gibbon moved that the letter should be received, and the motion was carried.
