Lift Caught When Current Failed. VATICAN CITY, March 24. Although 10,000 pilgrims were waiting lor the Pope to participate in an adoration of the Blessed Sacrament today, he failed to take his place in the gestatorial chair, which was carried to St Peter’s by sixteen scarlet-clad servitors, amid a brilliaryt procession of dignitaries, escorted by Swiss Guards. It was later discovered that when, with his Master of Ceremonies, the Pope entered the lift recentlv installed at the side of the Chapel of St Peter’s, the lift stuck for ten minutes because of a failure of the current. Eventuallv the Pope appeared and proceeded to the High Altar, amid shouts of “ Viva il Papa.”
