EMPIRE GAMES.

Probable Selections for New Zealand. SOME GOOD ATHLETES. It is probable that something definite regarding the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games, to be held at White City Stadium, London, from August 4 to August H next, will be announced by the New Zealand British Empire Games Association next week. The national athletic bodies principally concerned, the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association and the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, have not yet made their nominations, but as the closing date for these has been set at March 31, some action will have to be taken at an early date. The final selection of the team will be made by the Empire Games Association. So far as Canterbury is concerned, the principal prospects for inclusion in the team are G. T. Broadway and A. T. Anderson. Broadway is considered by those competent to judge be the greatest half-miler that New Zealand has produced and among the best three middle-distance runners in the world. His times are better than those of any other runner New Zealand has had. Anderson is not so certain of selection, but he is thought to have very good prospects as his performances over hurdles have stamped him as ,a first-class man. A Probable Team. 11. K. Brainsby, of Auckland, who has to his credit the best performance of any New Zealander for the hop, step and jump, having covered 49ft S»*in will probably be another who will be given very serious consideration. In some quarters it is considered certain that these three. Broadway, Anderson and Brainsby, will constitute the New Zealand team, with Lovelock, who is already in England. Both Savidan and Ley, of course, are of a class that would warrant their selection, but it is understood that neither is available on this occasion. J. B. M’Farlane, of Christchurch. 100yds and 220yds New Zealand champion, was thought to have good prospects, but his defeat by Harnpson, the Australian (himself considered in Australia not good enough for selection) has greatly diminished his chances. The only other possibility is thought to be F. Sharpiey, of Hastings, the 120 and 220yds hurdler. His form, however, is considered to be just a little below requirements. The Swimmers. So far as swimming is concerned, the names most mentioned have been those of Noel Crump, the brilliant Auckland sprint and middle-distance swimmer, and W. Whareaitu, of Rotorua. Crump is undoubtedly the best swimmer New Zealand has produced, and it is considered certain that he ’S capable of beating Australian swimmers who have been nominated

Whareaitu has shown remarkable capability as a backstroke performer. ft he is selected he will be the first Maori to represent this country in swimming. The local cycling centre has nominated F. J. Grose and G. R. B. Giles for inclusion in the team, but these nominations have yet to receive the endorsement of the governing body.
