TENNIS TOURNEY.
Form in Canterbury Championships. NORBERT-MUNNS FIGHTS HARD. There were few bright spots in the opening clay’s play of the Canterbury lawn tennis championships. Play generally was rather uninteresting. The defeat in the second round of Miss I. Poole, a seeded player, by Miss N. Sullivan, a promising young Timaru player, was a surprise. Miss Sullivan played brilliantly to defeat her redoubtable opponent’' 1 and is rapidly acquiring the necessary experience to bring her into the first flight. The best ‘game of the morning was that between the New Zealand champion, C. E. Malfroy, and N. G. Norbert-Munns. This match went to 31 games before Malfroy was able to dispose of his opponent. NorbertMunns played solidly to hold up his brilliant opponent for so long. The dther seeded players in the men's singles, 11. Dy'mond and T. RhodesWilliams, entered the second round— Dymond by beating E. Morris, 6-2, 6-4, and Rhodes-Williams through a bye in the first round. Miss Rudkin and ’ M iss** T. ’ Boi 'lc, seeded Flayers, all had comfortable wins, although Miss Rudkin bad to fight hard to win the second set front Miss J. Brewer at 7-5. The doubles events did not produce Men’s Singles. In the game bet weed a. E. Malfroy, anti N. G. Norbert-Munns play opened on Malfroy’s service. Serving strongly, he took this game with the loss of two points and with perfect returns took his opponent's service to lead two games to love. Norbert-Munns at this stage tightened tip his game and with perfect placements on the return of Maiftoy's, service? won the third game, and In the fourth levelled the score at two games all. The games went with service until seven all. when Norbert-Munns captured Malfroy’s service to lead S-7, but Malfroy was equal to the occasion; with fast ground shots played on the rising ball he took the net to score with wellplaced volleys. Malfroy retained the lead, and, capturing Xorbert-Munns’s service, won the first, set at 12-10. The second set was evenly contested, , and played at a fast pace with frequent net sallies by both players. Malfroy won six games to three, and the match, 12-10, 6-3. In this match the serving of both players was a feature. Malfroy varied his service cleverly, at times using, the American twist service with good effect. The baseline play was very sound, and Malfroy’s net play proved a factor towards his win. Nor-bert-Munns deserves particular credit for his long and solid opposition. A. R. Cant produced brilliant tennis to defeat D. F. Glanville with the loss of only five games in two sets. Cant drove severely from the baseline, making openings for frequent advances to the net. His volley ins was very solid and well placed. Glanville forced the pace, trying hard to bustle the younger player, but Cant, on the day, was irresistible. Foi’ceful Flay. The game between Miss Rudkin and Miss M. Stevens produced ve*v forceMiss M. Sherris produced very forceshots with a very free style. Miss Rudkin was the more accurate player, and her net play was more forceful. Miss Sherris, who has not had much match-play this season, put up a very creditable showing against her opponent. Each game was closely contested, Miss Rudkin winning, 7-5. 8-6. The prospects for the tournament are that there should be very interesting games in the later stages. The absence of C. Angas has robbed Canterbury of the additional interest of another meeting .with Malfroy. Present indications are that the final of the men’s singles will be fought out between Malfroy and Rhodes-Williams, with Malfroy a strong favourite. In the women’s singles the finalists should be Miss M. Wake and Miss T. Poole, although Miss Wake wifi receive strong opposition from Miss Rudkin, who may quite easily upset calculations. __ Late Results in Yesterday’s Play.
