EDUCATION BOARD.

Consideration of Monthly Reports. Reports were received and discussed at to-day’s meeting of the Canterbury Education Board, when there were present: Messrs W. P. Spencer (chairman), S. R. Evison, G. Benstead, C. S. Thompson, J. W. Preen, R. Wilde. W. A. Banks, G. W. Armitage, S. Smith, H. J. Bignell and S. Baird. The appointments committee reported that the department would not agree to the establishment of a district high school at Blackball, but sanctioned a Form 111. class. The proposal was accepted in the meantime. The following Gammack scholarship awards were made: Mr P. E. Bridges (Timaru) 1, Miss K. M. Harrow (Ashburton) 2, Miss M. A. Hitchcock (Linwood) 3. Circulars were received from the department giving details of the rationing scheme for employing all students, including grade O teachers, during the current year. A schedule was submitted showing an allotment of teachers for February, also a memorandum from the senior inspector dealing with the same matter. The Christchurch M.E.D. advised that it was distributing exercise books to pupils of city and suburban schools. The offer was accepted, with thanks. A memorandum was received from Dr Bakter-M'Laglan regarding steps to be taken to prevent a possible epidemic of measles. Removal of Shelter. The building comihittete’s report stated that a report was presented by Messrs Hurley and Thompson, the members delegated to confer with the senior inspector regarding the proposal that the shelter shed used as a classroom for some years at West Spreydon be replaced by one of the unoccupied portable rooms at Addington. On the members’ recommendation, it was resolved to apply to the department for a grant to cover the cost of removing the building to West Spr*eydon and reinstating it in its new position. Mr J. S. Barnett waited on the board and asked that Addington be allowed to retain the room for use as a dental clinic when such accommodation became necessary. After hearing Mr Barnett, the board adopted the report.
