Criticism of Rationing Scheme. Criticism of the rationing scheme for assistant teachers was replied to by Mr S. R. Evison and Mr J. W. Preen at to-day’s meeting of the Canterbury Education Board, Mr Preen referring to a statement made at a recent meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association as having been made by “ a man with a grouch.” Mr Evison, speaking to the report of the Appointments Committee, said that there had been some criticism of the rationing scheme. One school mentioned was Fendalton. He had a report showing that Fendalton was actually better off now than before the scheme came into operation. It had three more assistant teachers and was fully staffed to the limit of its accommodation, and that was a question into which the board could inquire later. North Beach was another school mentioned, and there also there were three more assistants than last year. Mr Preen said that at the meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association it had been stated that rationed teachers were filling hundreds of positions which should be permanent. appointments. As president of the Dominion Federation of School Committees’ Associations, Mr Preen added that the statement was incorrect. Not in one case was this so.
