Miss Marie Birchfleld, of the Christchurch Ladies’ Amateur Swimming Club, succeeded in her attempt to swim from the Canterbury Yacht Club’s jetty to Diamond Harbour yesterday. The conditions were not favourable, the water being very cold and choppy owing to a strong southerly breeze, but nevertheless Miss Birchfleld took the water at 12.30 p.m. and pluokily battled against a strong ebbing tide to reach her goal in the good time of lhr 31 min. Miss Birchfleld is a powerful breaststroke swimmer, possessing remarkable speed and staying power. Flannagan Cup. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 18. Ploughing his way through a heavy sea, C. J. M’Lenn (Fitzroy) won the Flnnnagan Cup, the classic two-mil® ! ocean swimming race of Taranaki, by ' thirty yards from W. Wright, an eighteen-year-old New Plymouth High School boy. who secured fastest time of 71 min 3 Ssec. J. Ryan (New Plymouth), a cripple, was third, fifty yards behind Wright. Ryan collapsed on reaching the shore, having suffered cramp all the way. He soon recovered.
