MISSIONS TO SEAMEN.

General •Secretary is Entertained. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 15. In honour of the visit of Mr Stuart S. Knox, general secretary to the Missions to Seamen, London, the Hon Alexander Shaw, chairman of the P. and O. Company, and Lady Margaret Shaw gave a luncheon to the leaders of shipping and others interested in the work of missions to seamen in Wellington.

The Alexander Shaw said that Mr Knox’s organisation had been largely instrumental in maintaining the good relationship between the seamen and their employers by bringing about the realisation of the other fellow’s point of view. It was also true that seamen, for whom the organisation worked, were still the most important missionaries of the Empire, he added. Among those present at the luncheon was a lady who had handed him as a donation a cheque for £IOO, and who wished to remain anonymous. He would hand this to Mr Knox as an earnest tribute to the work he had started in Wellington. Mr Knox, in replying, paid a tribute to the women who had helped the missions here and elsewhere by their self-sacrificing kindness and consideration for those men without a home and friends who visited the ports of the world in the interests of trade and the Empire.
