LIFE SAVING.
Events Commenced at South Brighton. Favoured with excellent weather condition?, the Canterbury Surf Association held the first of its series of competitions at South Brighton beach yesterday. Mr E. A. M. Leaver, Mayor of New Brighton, officially declared the season Pals* Alarm. While the Sumner Cup was being decided, a call for rescue was received about 400 yards towards New Brighton, and a competent team, composed of com bined surf club members, sped to the rescue, but when they arrived on the scene the two bathers in distress had reached the shore in safety. During the afternoon several items were rendered on the beach by the New Brighton Band. At the conclusion of the events, the president of the Surf Association (Mr D. V. Wilson) presented the cups won during the day. Results were: — Benson Shield. The Benson Shield was won by New Brighton A, with North Beach second and Sumner third. The teams were:— New Brighton A—S. Kingdon (belt), C. Cliff (support), A. Cocks. D. Cocks and A. Ansley (linesmen), It. Carson (reel), I. Pockson (patient). Instructor, C W. Smith. North Beach—L. Donaldson (belt), J. Donaldson (support). G. Bobby, R. Parker and G. Bast (linesmen). R. Kennedy (reel), C. Kemp (patient). V. G. Spiller, instructor. Sumner—J. Blackmore (belt). H. Stevens (support). J. Reid, F. Malley and J. Sarelius (linesmen). C. Stevens (reel), A. Partridge (patient). J. M. Frcngley, instructor. Single-handed Rescue. The single-handed rescue proved to be a very close contest, with the result in doubt until the last fifty yards. Results:—A. T. F. Stokes (New Brighton) 1, D. H. Symes (North Beach) 2. A T. Dalton (North Beach) 3. Tinge—3min 25 4-ssec. Also competed—J. Sutherland and H. Stevens (Sumner), A. T. M. Bolam (Taylor’s Mistake), 11. G. Smith (New Brifton) and A. C. Berry (Waimairi). Junior Bosuscltation. Owing to a question of rules, the decision was reserved in this competition. The competitors were: J. Sarelius and H. Stevens (Sumner), G. East and J. Donaldson (North Beach), D. Moorfleld and G. Marshall (Taylor’s Mistake), D. Cocks and A. Ansley (New Brighton) and H. C. Black (Waimairi). Sumner Cnp. The Sumner Cup resulted in a win for the Sumner Club, whose team won on its all-round efficiency. North Beach A, whose beltman gained fastest time, was second, and North Beach B and Taylor’s Mistake were third equal. The teams were:-r-Championship points. The points for the .club championship at present are:—North Beach 7J points, Sumner 4, New Brighton 3, Taylors Mistake %■
