Mr Peter Harris has joined the staff of South Island Motors, Ltd.

Mr A. E. Brereton (New Plymouth) is staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr G. 0. Broughton, Invercargill, is visiting Christchurch.

Mr Hubert Carter returned on Saturday morning to the city after a holiday at Waimate and Gore Bay.

Mr C. G. Pegg, director of physical training at the Young Men’s Christian Association, left Christchurch to-day on his annual leave. Mr E. P. Davis has been appointed branch advertising manager and aviation officer in Christchurch with the Vacuum Oil Proprietary, Ltd.

The Rev Alwyn K. Warren, the new Vicar of Merivale, will be inducted to the charge by the Bishop of Christchurch on the evening of Thursday. February S.

Mr T. D. Lennie left Christchurch for Invercargill by last night’s express to attend the funeral of his brother, Mr John A. Lennie, who died early yesterday morning. Guests at the New City Hotel include: Colonel J. W. Clark (Wellington), Messrs L. G. Pearce (Wellington), E. G. Nicholls (Auckland) and C. N. Beasley (Wellington). Dr A. J. Orchard, who has recovered from his recent illness, was welcomed on Saturday by his fellow members of the Christchurch Bowling Club when he took part in the games in the Bainett Friendly Bowl competition. The new diocesan registrar, Mr E. P. Wills, was to assume his position at the beginning of February, says the “ Church News ”, but, by arrangement. Canon J. de B. Galwey will remain at Church House for a month to initiate Mr Wills into the details of the work. Mr W. Machin, jun., branch advertising manager and aviation officer with the Vacuum Oil Proprietary, Ltd., in Christchurch, has been promoted to the New Zealand charge of these two departments. Mr Machin will leave for Wellington to-morrow evening to enter on his new duties.

The Rev G. W. Dent, chaplain of St George’s Hospital, who has been indisposed, has shown much improvement in health recentlj’ - , and is able to be up and about, states the “Church News” for February. But Mr Dent is under strict orders to rest for at least a month. The Rev E. C. Atkinson, Vicar of Banks Peninsula, who has accepted the cure of Halswell-Spreydon, will take charge of his new parish early in March. Mr Atkinson came to the diocese from the diocese of Chichester in 1929.

Mr M. A. Johnston, fields inspector in the Lands and Survey Department at Blenheim, has received notice of his transfer to the position of fields inspector attached to the North Auckland office, with headquarters at Pukekohe. Mr Johnston has been on the Blenheim staff for eight years.

Mr William Goodfellow, of Auckland, who was a member of the New Zealand delegation to the Ottawa Conference, arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the North Island with his son and daughter and two nephews on a holiday tour, and is staying at the United Service Hotel. To-day Mr Goodfellow was the guest of honour at a luncheon at Ballantyne’s, where he spoke on “ The Case for Reciprocal Trade with Great Britain.” The luncheon was arranged by the New Zealand Producers’ and United Kingdom Manufacturers’ Reciprocal Trade Federation. Mr Goodfellow is chairman of the Auckland branch of the federation. Later he will visit Dunedin and Invercargill, where he will give similar addresses. Before returning to the North Island he will visit the Southern Lakes and Mount Cook.
