The fourth round of the rinks opened in fine but dull weather, and a sharp shower fell at the conclusion of the morning’s play. The greens were on the heavy side and lifeless, while frequent squalls made the conditions unpleasant during the afternoon. Currie’s West End rink, Timaru, did not have a great deal of difficulty iri attending to Madsen (Sydenham), although they had to concede the losers a five on the nineteenth, the result of fine play by Britten, Madsen’s third. Playing Shepherd (Kaituna), Blackham was unlucky in cutting out West End’s bowl, and left the opposition six on the fourth end. Play was fairly even, with the Timaru men gradually pulling up. On the eighteenth the score was 20-16 against them. Then Blackliam. drew two good ones and Currie to»ok out an opposition bowl for a possible four, but on a measure South Canterbury got three, leaving the score one down and two heads to go. Currie drew the shot when the opposition were I three up on the penultimate head, maki ing a tie. On the last end Timaru lay two, and Shepherd burned with his j first. On the re-play Timaru lay one j shot, which Shepherd displaced with his j last bowl, leaving Kaituna two up on j the game. This was Currie’s first loss, j The Papanui men, skipped by the Rev j E. Bandy, were going well in the early i stages of their game with Ives (Edgeware). The game was very closely contested, but gradually Papanui forged ahead. Edgeware’s good efforts being nullified by the aggressive tactics of Morrison and Bandy. In their next outing the Papanui men suffered their first loss, going down to Lambeth (Balmasewen), who won the singles title in Dunedin in 1930.

A win by the Sumner men was the reward after solid play, marked by fine r saving shots by Martin, when they played Campbell (Kaituna) in the fourth . round. Against Piper, Sumner played a great game, giving the Nelson men a . severe defeat, Sumner scoring two fives. Armstrong (Roslyn) was then respou- . sible for Martin’s first defeat, being ten points up when the game finished. Martin has gone well with five wins. He meets Huntly (Otago) in the seventh . round and Hanna (Kaikorai) in the eighth. In an exciting tussle with Huntley’s Otago four. Pollock (Riccarton Racecourse) was returned a winner by a point. Pollock proving equal to drawing the shot to win in a close end. The Racecourse men were unfortunate in going down in the third round to a Dunedin team, which got a break early, the Riccarton players leaving their run rather late. Against a Central Otago four, Riccarton gained another head victory, after an even but not a spectacular game. Henaghan (Caledonian) was then the means of Pollock losing his second life. The Racecourse men have done well to win four games. W. Foster (Caledonian) was one up on the board and lying two, when Dee (Nelson) had to drive with his last bowl. Playing an excellent shot, he took the jack to the ditch to notch a " great three, winning two up. M’Comish. who is third for the Nelson crack, has Dee as his partner in the pairs, in which competition he is in the surviv- " ing seven. The Nelson men are playing very good bowls, and the rink is considered hard to dispose of. especially as . : they showed an eight-point victory over ' Shepherd (Kaituna). M’Cornish is now skipping the rink, changing places with Dee. They have five wins. The Greymouth team, presided over by Whibley, was too good for Brown (Mornington) on Otago green in the fourth round, M’Corkindale and Moss performing well. Whibley’s first two wins were marked by high scoring- and in his third he suffered a reverse at the hands of Ussher (Anderson’s Bay) by a good margin. He made amends by landing his next two games in fine style, that against Turnbull (Waihopai) being outstanding. With five wins the West Coasters have done splendidly. Deare’s men were invincible when playing against Carswell on the Roslyn green in the fourth round and the Taieri . men were given a decisive drubbing. 4 The Dunedin rink is regarded as sure to play a prominent part in the contest this b year. Deare won the rink title in 1931 at Auckland and was runner-up to n Walker when he won in 1932. The only alteration in the original team is Nieolson, who is a semi-finalist in the singles. Edwards (Temuka) won his fourth round against Warden, who defaulted, two members of the Spreydon rink liav--1 ing to return to Christchurch. The j South’ Canterbury men then met Hodge (Awamoa. Oamaru) and had no trouble !in registering their fourth win. Going on. they won against Crawford. This I brings Edwards into the picture with five iviis and as lie Is a great battler go still further. Lewis (Christchurch) put up a good game when he was responsible for Hutchison’s defeat, the erstwhile Dunedin crack going down by one point after an exciting game. Anderson, who has Adams, Provan and Manning in his Timaru rink, is unbeaten after the six games. His team has been giving good exhibitions all through and will meet Ramsay (Barrington) and Lewis (Christchurch) in the next games. The South Canterbury team’s game in the sixth round at Otago was remarkable for Harraway’s uphill fight. He n just failed to get his nose in front. On .. the fourteenth Timaru was 21-5 on the 1 Dunedin men, who then threw the jack .. for the remaining ends, recording fifteen : points. Requiring five to win in the last ~ ! end they secured four and went down ’ Iby one point. Tt was a great finish. • "The Rev E. Bandy is going well. He ‘"I has five wins and the Papanui men arc- .. still in the picture. j Another South Canterbury team that i is performing well is the Kaitoa four, Lister, Crisp. Gray and Young. They i have lost only one game, to Jackson
